For example the proton is a three quark state consisting of two u-quarks and one d-quark and the neutron is a three quark state consisting of one u-quark and two d-quarks. Once again the introduction of a new sublevel made it possible to explain the present level in a simple way.   Quarks and Leptons is a nice introduction to modern particle physics. It's a bit dated (), but isn't really missing anything too important and is still the most up-to-date comprehensive book on particle physics/5.

    In particle physics, a lepton is an elementary particle of half-integer spin that does not undergo strong interactions. Two main classes of leptons exist, charged leptons, and neutral leptons. Charged leptons can combine with other particles to form various composite particles such as atoms and positronium, while neutrinos rarely interact with anything, and are consequently rarely observed. The best known of all leptons Composition: Elementary particle. Starting with the unification hypothesis of mixings of quarks and leptons and small quark-like mixings at the see-saw scale, we find that two large mixings for ν e —νx03BC; andv μ —v τ at the weak scale are obtained as a result of renormalization group evolution and radiative magnification if the three neutrinos are quasi degenerate in masses and possess the same CP parity.

In fig. 1 we show the mass ratios for three generations. The strongest hierarchy and geometric relation mu × mt ∼ m2 c exist for the upper quarks.   The masses quoted for the U and D are about 1/3 the mass of a proton, since we know the proton has three quarks. But in other combinations they contribute different masses. In the pion, an up and an anti-down quark yield a particle of only MeV of mass energy, while in the rho vector meson the same combination of quarks has a mass of MeV!

The texts are concise and insightful. 95% of the lepton masses are provided by the ˝{lepton. The b{quark contributes about 97% to the masses in the charge −1=3 sector. The charge +2=3 sector is dominated to 98% by the t{quark. Both in case of the charged leptons and of the quarks the contribution of the rst family to the total mass in the corresponding channel is almost negligible.

The hints exhibited by the quark and lepton mass spectra towards possible underlying flavor symmetries, from which realistic models of mass generation could be built, are emphasized.
